I would like to start a thread where people post ideas about "fun" and creative ways (other than going to the gym) of getting our exercise in. Please add to the idea list by posting your ideas.
here are two to get started (similar, but a bit different):
* taking your dog for a walk or for a hike
* prayer walking your neighborhood.

* wiggle whenever and wherever you can. wag your foot, bounce your legs
* get into a pool and do water aerobics
* drinking ice water causes your body to burn more calories
* park in the back of the parking lots of stores and walk
* if walking is hard on your back, grab a shopping cart and use it like a walker and go up and down aisles of stores. Warehouse stores are good as you can walk for a long time without buying things.
* take a shopping cart to the parking lot and walk up and down the aisles on a nice sunny day

When my daughter was small enough to be in a pram I did walk a lot more. I had to as I could not get the pram on a bus and had no car.
Before I got a car I used to go everywhere by bus and therefore had to carry everything I bought from a shop back home. Now I can visit a shop put things in the car and drive to the next shopping centre. It does not take as long and it is not as tiring but I am not as fit as I once was.
Before I moved to this house there were more places that I wanted to go to that I could walk to within 30 minutes. In fact sometimes because the garage where I kept the car was so far from my flat it was often quicker to walk to some places than get the car out and drive. Therefore I do not walk as far as I once did. Today my local library and shops are closer to my home than my garage used to be. Most places that I go to now are over 2 miles away and some 4 or 6 miles away and I struggle to find the time and energy to walk there and back especially when I have things to carry.

Confirming: A pram is a stroller. (I'd admit that when I was young enough to be in one, it was still called a baby carriage, but I'd be dating myself.)

Well now, IF I COULD consider it fun.... LOL.... I teach first grade and school starts tomorrow...So when we do the "get the kids wiggles out" I could be a little more energetic...Really though playing with kids can be fun... need a new mindset though...

I recently got two cocker spaniels who want to walk minimally twice a day- they "tell" me when it's time to get up and walk every morning!

We have three german shepherds who all expect their nightly hike. Since we have to keep them on leash the first 2 blocks until we get to the "leash-free zone" of the hiking trail, it takes both of us (hubby and myself) to take the three dogs hiking. So our nightly hikes have become a family event--and great regular exercise for both of us "human" members of the family. - teresa

Personally, I park a mile away from my job and walk every day. This way there are no excuses or wimping out. I HAVE to get to work and I HAVE to get to my car each day, so the walking gets done. I also show up at my husband's job about 45 minutes early, hand him the car keys and my water bottle (which he so generously has filled with filtered water for me when I return) and I go across the street to the park and run for the remaining time until his quitting time. I do this 4-5 times a week.

Honestly, Kimberly! You are an inspiration and an astonishment to me! Please tell me you're younger than my 57 years. I used to do that sort of thing 32 years ago, but that was then. Keep up the walking and running; I wish I had.

Did you say "fun" ways to get my exercise in? I don't think I ever used the words "fun" & exercise in the same sentence before? Ok, Ok, I'll play the game. The most fun way I've ever exercised is with my cousin who is currently 7 years old. Turning on her cd player in the living room and both of us dancing. Or, if we're watching a musical together we'll get up and dance with the people on the t.v. It's pretty funny because neither one of us can dance, but we act like we can. Between the dancing and the laughing it's pretty fun exercise.

It looks like it's been kinda slow here, so I'll add my daily exercise routine.
If you're like most people (including my doctor), the stereotypical picture of a truck driver is that he is overweight, sits in the cab of a big rig and is completely sedentary all day while driving the interstates. In my job description, that's just not true. When you haul construction equipment on a low-boy flat-bed trailer you have to secure your load with chains and binders. The chains weigh 18 pounds a piece, the binders about 13 pounds. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires any load in excess of 10,000 pounds be secured with a minimum of four chains and binders on the chassis, plus any extra required to prevent any movable portion of the load from moving outside the boundaries of the trailer (you really don't want a backhoe boom swinging into your highway lane as you pass one of us!).
For just one backhoe I get to carry six chains and six binders from their storage rack behind the cab of the truck, put them all in place, tighten them, drive to the job site, then remove them and put them back on the storage rack. Also included is the chance to climb vertically from the ground the cab of the machine (which may be up to seven feet above ground level) and back down again. Multiply this by 10 to 20 loads a day, and there you have it: My exercise routine. I'm not going to say it's always "fun," but I enjoy what I do. My heart rate goes up, my shoulders and arms are nicely toned; too bad I can't say that about my waist and stomach. Oh, and one more thing: Since it's my job, I get paid for it, also!
