Well, after all this time of having almost no sugar, I had two social events to go to. One was my birthday party and my daughter brought carrot cake. I had just a little piece, and it was really good. No big deal. Then last week, we had a ladies night at our church. A fun evening, they call it Chic Chat and Chocolate, and yes, there is always lots of chocolate. Again, I had just a little bit and thought I was really in control. Wrong!! I am craving sugar again, big time! A nibble here, a nibble there, and soon I have pretty much sabotaged my whole diet. I am so upset with myself! I know I need to turn this whole thing over to God again, and get back to basics. I've been telling myself this for several days in a row, but it seems like there is always a piece of candy sitting somewhere to trip me up. Yesterday it was halloween candy in the doctors office, and I had it in my mouth before I even realized it! Lesson: I am never in control! It's all an illusion, and it can go away at any time. The only remedy for the sugar binge is to turn to God every time a temptation presents itself, and ask for the self-discipline to pass it by. I have stopped doing that in recent months and I guess I got a little lazy and maybe a just a little cocky about my weight loss success. I need to humble myself and get back to giving God the control. Today I started telling myself that I don't even like candy. Wonder how long it will take before I start believing myself? LOL!

I used to love candy corn as a kid, which may explain my mouth full of fillings, crowns and root canals. Fortunately (but too late) I've lost my liking for them.

I used to cycle through that as well. Sugar seems to be physically addicting for me (except for small amounts of sugar in dairy products like whipped cream or ice cream). It may have something to do with hypoglycemia, or maybe it is just the way my body is wired. Anyhow, once I am free from sugar for a while, I stop craving it. But if I have some (give in for that piece of cheesecake or carrot cake or the truffle) ...wham! I seem to be craving it to the point of addiction and if I don't exercise tons of self control, I will find myself addicted and eating 5 or 6 sweets a day until I am getting sick from too much sugar. I liken it to an alcoholic...they can only stay "free" from the addiction if they abstain from it. One drink, and they are hooked again. It is the same for me and most refined sugar products. With the exception of milk products, I have to stay free from high refined sugar things like sweets, pastries, etc.
At first that was really hard for me, because I wanted the sugar. I would give in more than I wouldn't. But as I got sick/addicted more often, I started seeing the "sweet" as a source of suffering instead of as a source of pleasure. That change in how I look at it has helped me to not covet the sweets and now it is pretty easy to resist the doughnuts at church on Sunday morning and the candies laying around everywhere you go this time of year.
So maybe what you need is to have a change in your thinking about sugar/candy. Stop seeing it as a source of pleasure and start seeing it in terms of what it does to you...sick, low energy, gain weight, etc.... Maybe that will help. - teresa
