A few days ago, while I was eating breakfast, a hawk moth landed on the dining room table beside my coffee cup. A hawk moth is a very large moth that flies and hovers like a hummingbird; they are often mistaken for hummingbirds in the twilight. They normally come out at dusk and are active at night, then hide during the day. This particular moth had flown in through the open door to my backyard. I tried to catch it inside a glass, in order to release it, but their eyesight is excellent, and it easily avoided my attempts to capture it. As it flew it repeatedly bumped against the ceiling and walls and various lamps throughout the house, to the point I was afraid it was going to hurt itself.
Finally it hovered around the kitchen sink light. I carefully placed my hand near the light. It landed on my hand, but its wings were still fluttering rapidly, and if I moved it would take flight. Finally its wings stopped beating, and it rested fully on my hand. I slowly walked out of the kitchen, through the sun room and went outside. As soon as we were outdoors it took flight and flew away, free of ceilings, walls, and lights that were confusing to it.
I have been reading introductions and testimonies and things we have shared here, and I see a correlation to my adventure with the hawk moth. We have all gotten ourselves into situations and places where we should not have gone, sometimes through our own choices, sometimes through deception, sometimes through ignorance. We flutter around, bumping into obstacles we don't understand. We are attracted to what we perceive to be answers, like a moth to lights, only to be confused all over again when it doesn't work as we thought it might. We keep moving on our own, wondering where we are and how we get out where we belong.
Perhaps we should stop trying. God is holding His hand where we are, and is waiting for us to place ourselves in it. He waits for us to place ourselves wholly in Him, to still our wings, so He can take us to where He wants us to be, to where we should be.
